Now for the inside of your private rental property.
Firstly, get a feel for the general condition. Is it freshly decorated, can you see or smell damp for example. Are you free to change to decoration in this house or flat to rent?
Don’t feel picky about testing all taps and the shower to check they’re working. Go for it as there’s nothing worse than moving in only to find they need repairing.
Ask about the heating system. Check the radiators are all working if there is central heating.
Is the property for rent warm and well insulated? Double glazing? Cavity walls filled in and insulation in the loft?
Ask about the energy efficiency rating. Even if it’s your ideal private property to rent, low energy efficiency can mean high running costs and a depressingly cold experience in the winter.
If the house or flat to let is part or fully furnished, check if the white goods work in the kitchen and if there is any damaged furniture throughout the house. Is the kitchen in good working order with ample storage and work surfaces?
