Bromley is London's largest borough at nearly 60 square miles and represents a large slice of the south-east of the city, and promotes itself as the clean and green borough. Its affluent authorities have frequently sought to be recognised as part of Kent, not as a suburb of greater London. Detached 1930's houses with gardens start to take over further east on the outskirts of Bromley and Beckenham. Beckenham's offers numerous parks and golf courses, this leafy suburb is also well served by public transport links. Beckenham has two railway stations. Beckenham Junction and New Beckenham Station which provides a route to London. Beckenham is also linked by tram to nearby Croydon and Wimbledon.
Orpington offers houses a bustling shopping centre with a diverse mix of well-known names and a large number of local restaurants and independent stores. The Walnut Shopping Centre also provides a lively food and clothes market in its main square. North of Orpington and to the east side of the main Chislehurst Road, provides a mixture of semi-detached properties dating from mid-war to the 1970's.
After the Great Exhibition at Hyde Park in 1851, the entire glass building was dismantled and moved to a new permanent site on parkland at Sydenham, Crystal Palace. The destruction of the building by fire in 1936 left a void in the park that has never been filled. Situated 8 miles from central London and perched up high, offering impressive views over the capital, Crystal Palace still retains a large degree of its impressive Victorian architecture.
Bromley is twinned with the German town of Neuwied and has a population of nearly 300,000.
