Letting Agents guide to the London borough of Enfield
Enfield was once a small town some distance from London, but the rapid growth of London itself has turned it into a large suburb. Enfield’s roots go back to Roman times and it is stood on the well known Ermine Street – the road linking London with York and Lincoln. The better known areas of Enfield include Edmonton, Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill. It is also home to three of the campuses of Middlesex University.
Central London is accessible by tube and train, and there are regular bus services too.
Palmers Green to the south is firmly middle class whilst heading north Winchmore Hill and Enfield Town follow suit. Semi-rural Hadley Wood, favoured haunt of the rich and famous, fringes the fields of Hertfordshire. In stark contrast the Victorian terraces and tower blocks of Edmonton and Ponders End sit uneasily against the largely disused industrial sites along the River Lea.
Hadley wood offers large detached mid-war properties on the edge of green belt land. A train service to Moorgate ensures a wealth of city interest. Grand Edwardian houses surround Hadley Common, whilst the grandest properties lie south of Camlet Way and Beech Avenue.
Winchmore Hill offers largely Victorian terraces and cottages in roads off the centre with larger, up-market Edwardian and mid-war semis in roads towards Southgate. Southgate is solidly suburban with an attractive mix of solid Edwardian semis and half-timbered 1930s houses. Still served by the tube but closer to green belt land, Cockfosters and Oakwood are slightly more expensive than Southgate.
Palmers Green offers rich pickings for flat hunters as many of this once elegant Edwardian suburbs grand four and five bedroom houses have been converted into apartments. Further from the town centre, mid war semis predominate. Bowes Park, south of the busy north circular has smaller Victorian housing.
The London borough of Enfield incorporates some 2,154 streets.
