Letting Agents guide to the London borough of Greenwich
In 1965 Greenwich as we know it was formed, when the boroughs of Greenwich and Woolwich were joined. Greenwich is probably most famous for it's Observatory and it's status as the 'birthplace of time'; clocks worldwide are set to Greenwich Mean Time. Over the centuries the borough has seen it's history shaped by Royalty, invasion and the Industrial Revolution, which explain it's strong ties to both the army and navy.
It is one of the east London districts that hopes to play host to events at the 2012 Olympics should the bid go to London, hoping to use the now infamous Millennium Dome as one of the venues.
Home of Premiership club Charlton Athletic, Greenwich is home to over 220,000 inhabitants and incorporates some 1,685 streets.
Greenwich stretches east along the river beyond Woolwich to Plumstead and Thamesmead. Mush of the rivers edge lies derelict and undeveloped since the borough's great dockyard days. To the south lies the suburban sprawl of Eltham and the boarders of middle class Bromley.
Greenwich Village remains a quaint, if touristy mix of antique and second hand bookshops. Blackheath offers a good mix of Victorian and Edwardian homes, a high number of which have been converted into flats. Blackheath Village itself is a thriving mix of restaurants, designer shops and pubs. Larger family houses fringe the Royal Blackheath Golf Club and numerous developments of large executive houses can be found heading east to Oxleas Woods. The best property can be found to the west and the borders of Blackheath and Greenwich.
The traffic choked A102M that feeds the Blackwall Tunnel dominates as you head east whilst the Greenwich peninsular continues to be developed as an ambitious housing project for the new Millennium.
