Lewisham is a London borough in the south-east of the city. Lewisham has received a welcome shot in the arm with the arrival of the DLR. Lewisham still has a lot to offer the bargain hunter and could now see a transformation into property hotspot now that it has its DLR lifeline into the capital. Lewisham stretches south from the Thames and the once industrial Deptford into the Victorian suburbs of New Cross, Brockley and Lewisham itself.
Blackheath is Lewisham’s major centre and was once a fashionable suburb for wealthy city merchants between the 17th and 19th centuries. Residing in both the boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich, Blackheath has little to offer in terms of bargains. Expensive Victorian terraces are to be found in the roads surrounding the town centre whilst larger family homes and conversions can be found off the Heath. The pretty, middle class village of Blackheath stands out before Forest Hill and Sydenham lead uphill to Crystal Place. Lee and Grove Park to the south offer stocks of respectable mid war housing before the borders with Bromley. Lee boasts similar large Victorian properties around its most desirable areas. Generally Lee is cheaper than its neighbour, yet prices increase the nearer you get to Blackheath's boarders.
The conservation areas of New Cross around Telegraph Hill and Brockley around Hilly Fields provide sought after, grand double fronted Victorian villas. However many of the properties remain as undeveloped family homes.
Hither Green is generally cheaper and offers a large stock of two and three story Victorian terraces. The roads around Manor House Gardens boast large Victorian and Edwardian Conversions.
Perched up high overlooking London to the north and suburban South London to the south, Sydenham and Forrest Hill were once considered smart and affluent by the Victorians who believed their position high above the Thames was salubrious. Spectacular views and grand Victorian family homes, many converted into spacious flats are plentiful if not cheap. Properties around Hornimans Gardens prove sought after and expensive.
The London borough of Lewisham incorporates some 1,611 streets.
