Letting Agents guide to the London borough of the City of Westminster
To the west of the City of London lies the City of Westminster, Britain's seat of power.
Home of the UK government at the Palace of Westminster and London's famous West End. Westminster also has some of the most exclusive shopping and residential districts in London, including Covent Garden, Soho and Mayfair.
Trafalgar square, which is bordered by the National Gallery and dominated by Nelson's Column, is seen as the centre of London and acts as a hub for the rest of the borough. Westminster is also officially the Queen's place of residence, with Buckingham Palace within it's boundaries, as well as being a centre for public recreation: the Royal Albert Hall, Lord's Cricket Ground, Hyde Park and Regent's Park (home of London Zoo) are all in the borough.
The heart of the capital and one of the biggest financial centres in the world, the City of London may not spring to mind first when in search of a London home.
The city is still primarily commercial, stocked with tall glass fronted buildings from every side and shops and bars that bustle with the nine-to-five yet lie deserted at the weekend.
The Barbican's austere grey appearance hides a very popular and sought after development. Built in the 1970's and originally intended as council flats, the inner complex houses an arts centre along with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the City of London Girls School. Penthouses offer true luxury yet are few and far between.
World famous for its still thriving meat market, apartments and conversions in Smithfield are considered to be amongst the hippest within the City of London. Close to fashionable Clerkenwell, there are excellent restaurants and pubs and a lively atmosphere.
Fleet Street is hugely popular with city workers now that the presses lay silent and the journalists have been evicted to Docklands.
The London borough of City of Westminster incorporates some 1,753 streets.
